Racing on asphalt is far different than dirt racing. There is very
little prep work to do at the track. Nearly all prep-work is done at shop, and mostly it’s done from inside the tire. There is some minimal work that can be done from the outside of the tires. This section is more brief than our other sections, but we find it contains almost everything you need
to know. If you have specific questions about prepping asphalt tires, please
let us know.
Internal
Prepping – Internal prepping
is the ideal procedure to use for tires used on asphalt tracks. Listed below
are our general recommendations. These are just guidelines, so the exact amounts can be adjusted as necessary to your preference. Venom Bite Green is the recommended prep for rolling inside of asphalt tires,
so all the below recommendations are for using that prep. Always roll your tires
a minimum of 48 hours before racing.
· Hot Weather
– This requires the minimal amount of internal prep. Inside of an 8.00
x 6 tire, we would normally roll two ounces of Venom Bite Green. We would
use one ounce in our left front tire, and no prep inside of our left rear tire. For
sprint or enduro racing, one ounce of prep in all four tires is recommended. Allow
the prep to roll for 12 hours inside the tires.
· Average / Mild Weather – For this weather, you will need slightly more prep. For oval racing we use four ounces inside our right side
tires, two ounces in our left front, and one ounce inside of the left rear tire. For sprint or enduro racing we would recommend
two ounces inside of all four tires. Allow the prep to roll for 12 to 24 hours
inside the tires.
· Cold Weather
– For cold weather, you will need to prep more aggressive. For oval racing we would recommend rolling a total of six
ounce inside the right side tires, four ounces in the left front tire, and two ounces inside the left rear tire. Split the rolling in the right side and left front up over two different days to prevent prep from climbing
into the sidewalls of the tire rolls. For sprint or enduro racing, we recommend
using three ounces inside of all four tires.
Trackside
Prepping – Asphalt tires only
need prepped at the track if you feel they are not soft enough or are not making enough bite.
Prepping at the track can also help tires come in quicker for qualifying.
If
you need to soften your tires at the track, warm the tires with tire warmers or a hot box.
Wipe coats of Venom Bite Green onto the tire with a rag or paint brush until the desired durometer reading is reached.
If
you simply want the tires to come in quicker, wipe one to two light coats with a rag.
Allow the prep to adequately dry before going to the grid.
Retreating Tires – After the day is complete, you need to scrape off all the excess rubber buildup from the
tires before packing up your equipment. If you plan to reuse this set of tires, they need to be retreated from the outside
only. Do NOT apply more prep to the inside. Once you have returned home, apply
one coat of Venom Bite Pink before storing the tires. On the week you
are going racing again, apply three coats of Venom Bite Pink to the tires 3 to 5 days before racing.
